This is how a home invasion should end

Not with a whimper, but a bang.

One invader dead and the other in critical condition.

The victim of a home invasion fought off two attackers early Thursday by shooting both in the head, killing one, police said.

One of the intruders, Darreon Carter, 18, died in a Tulsa hospital. The other, Daniel Holman, 23, is in critical condition, police said. [emphasis mine]

There’s only one appropriate response to that!

On a more serious note, this part of the story raises a good point for everyone to keep in mind.

The woman initially cooperated, but when one intruder told her to undress, she pulled a snub-nosed revolver from her purse and shot him, police said.

You know how the authorities and gun banners keep saying that you should cooperate with violent criminals? That if you give them what they want, they won’t hurt you? They get strangely quiet when asked what to do when what the attacker wants is to hurt you. Except when it’s rape – then they say you should throw up on yourself to “make yourself undesirable.”

Think about that for a second. If that actually works – if it actually makes him suddenly not want to rape you because he’s grossed out by it – how do you think he’s going to react to having his “fun” spoiled? Do you really think he’s just going to walk away? Do you really think you’ll survive his anger?

These cockroaches obviously planned from the start to commit rape, and very possibly murder, too. She and her boyfriend are very probably alive today because she had a gun and the will to use it.

A struggle for the gun broke out, and her boyfriend tried to help, police said.

Although she took blows to her head, the woman was able to shoot the other intruder. She fired five shots in all, Yates said.

I can’t fault her accuracy. They don’t say how many shots hit (at least three out of five), but for four of those shots she was also fighting off a physical attack in grappling range. She also emptied the gun which meant that if the attacker managed to take it from her he wouldn’t be able to use it against her.

Brighton Park typically doesn’t see much criminal activity. Yates said there were no immediate signs that the woman knew the attackers.

These kinds of crimes don’t depend on “good” or “bad” neighborhoods, they can happen anywhere.

Capt. Travis Yates said the woman was walking through a dark parking lot about 3:50 a.m. at the Brighton Park apartments in the 4800 block of South Darlington Avenue after a trip to a fast-food restaurant. [emphasis mine]

Here’s another lesson to be taken from this. She was just making a quick trip to grab some food. How many times have you thought, “Oh, I’m just going to the MickeyD’s/Hardlee’s/Toxic Bell drive-thru, I’m not even getting out of the car. I don’t need to bother taking my gun.” Remember, just because you’re not getting out of your car, or the place you’re going is “safe,” doesn’t mean you’re not vulnerable. You have to get out of the car when you get home. You have to get to your car in the first place. When it comes to your security, a car is just a glass box. Carry your gun!
