New Range Safety Rules – Be careful out there

And CARRY YOUR GUN! Even at the range, if it’s allowed there at all.

The Cumberland County District Attorney says that Todd Getgen was a firearms enthusiast. That was his hobby. He just purchased and was licensed for a custom made semi-automatic with a silencer.

The D.A. says someone shot him from a distance and took off with his rifle. It happened Wednesday in broad daylight at a public shooting range on State Game land in North Middleton Township, Cumberland County.  Getgen’s body was found there around two Wednesday afternoon, by another person who came there to use the range. Investigators don’t know yet if he was targeted or if this was random.

Someone out there is shooting people at public ranges to steal their guns. Let me repeat that. Someone out there is shooting people at public ranges to steal their guns. While most of us don’t really worry too much about robbery at the range – most criminals wouldn’t try to sneeze wrong at a range, cause, you know, everybody there has a gun – it looks like we need to start. Especially those of us who use unsupervised or public ranges. Even if you don’t live near where this happened, there’s nothing keeping this scum from traveling, and there is always the possibility of a copycat starting up somewhere else now that it’s made the news.

  • Keep a loaded gun on your person and accessible at all times. If you plan to shoot your carry piece, keep another one loaded and ready. Don’t shoot all your guns dry at the same time.
  • When you go downrange to change your targets, don’t leave all your guns on the bench. Take one with you.
  • If you can arrange it, take a buddy – don’t go the the range alone. If you can’t take a buddy, don’t go to an empty range, or one with only one or two other people there. One could be a robber looking for victims. Two could be working together. Three or more are unlikely to work together for something like this.
  • Don’t go to Condition White. Maintain awareness of your surroundings and the people around you at all times. Unfortunately, this will necessarily take away from the enjoyable and relaxing “zen” of shooting, but there’s not much that can be done about that.

Those are all the tips I can think of right now. If anyone can think of some others, please add them in the comments.
